Marcus To (@marcusto) is a saint. Last day of Comic Con and I’m a his booth yet again, this time because my friend wants to get a couple of Marcus’ awesome prints. While we’re there waiting to get his attention, a young woman is picking up her commission. It looks like it’s Tim Drake wearing a jacket on a chilly day, there’s a gust of wind. Frankly, it’s awesome! The amount of detail is insane - it’s just a gorgeous commission. The man does stunning art, and frankly, he should be charging more. The young woman is staring at her commission and not saying much, then she attempts to verbalize her feelings and can’t quite get it out… “I feel like… there’s something not right about it but I’m not sure what…” I think I started getting red and I grimaced and… man, I just could not believe what was happening! Marcus, meanwhile has this beatific smile and seems incredibly understanding. The young woman notices that she’s holding up the line and says, “Oh, I think they want to buy prints.” My friend buys a couple of prints and Marcus remembers me and says how he re-blogged the picture of the commission he’d done for me (Klarion the Witch Boy!). Marcus is just a class act, friendly, easy to talk to and incredibly talented. As we were leaving I saw him taking out another piece of paper, apparently ready to try another commission to make this picky, selfish, entitled fan happy.
In my head I felt the need to apologize to him on behalf of courteous, empathic humans everywhere. Is this the kind of picky, Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons fans that they face all the time?! I’m amazed he retains his warmth and humanity having to deal with ingrates.
I’m sorry Marcus… but I hope that for every fan like her you have tons more that appreciate your work! You’re a mensch.
